  • Wool weaving — Middle Atlas rugs In progress

Large living room rug, cream and terracotta

Fatima Ait Ali · Aït Hadiddou, Middle Atlas

    Week 3

Week three. I finished the first third of the field yesterday. The terracotta is from madder that I dyed in January — I always dye more than I need so I have the same batch when I return to a colour. The buyer asked for something asymmetric on the border. I tried three versions. The third one is right.

  • Leatherwork — bags and belts Delivered

    Soft briefcase, dark chestnut

    Nour Benkirane · Medina, Fez

Delivered last week. Three and a half weeks of work. The buyer asked for a longer strap than I usually make — I added a brass ring at the shoulder so it can be adjusted without a punch. I like that detail enough to use it on the next one.

  • Tatreez — Palestinian cross-stitch In progress

Large tatreez panel — Beit Nuba cypress, 60 × 40 cm

Rania Barakat · Ramallah, West Bank

    Week 3

Week three. The top half of the panel is finished. This is the largest cypress border I have made in two years — the buyer wanted something significant, not decorative. Lina watched me stitch the corner turn yesterday. I showed her three times. She got it on the fourth attempt. That is fast.

  • Kuba cloth — raffia cut-pile weaving Delivered

Large wall hanging — eight Kuba patterns

    Cécile Muamba · Kasai-Central

Delivered. Three months. The buyer asked for eight different patterns in one cloth. I told her that was ambitious. She said she knew. We are both happy with how it came out. Béatrice helped with three of the simpler patterns — you can see where she worked if you look closely. I told the buyer. She said that made it more interesting.

  • Zellige and ceramic tile In progress

Bathroom niche panel, eight-pointed star in white and cobalt

    Khalid El Fassi · Fez

    Week 6

Week six. All the tiles are cut. I am setting them now — this is the part that shows whether the cutting was right or whether it was almost right. So far it is right. Younès watched me set the first row. He asked why I tap each tile before I press it. I told him he would understand in year three.

  • Wool weaving — Middle Atlas rugs Delivered

Bedroom rug, undyed cream with indigo border

Fatima Ait Ali · Aït Hadiddou, Middle Atlas

Delivered. Eight weeks. The buyer asked for something that would age well without maintenance. Undyed wool does that — it gets softer and the lanolin comes through over time. The indigo will fade slightly in the first year and then hold. I told her this. She said that is exactly what she wanted.

  • Nubian handwoven cotton In progress

Custom Nubian throw — blue, black, and cream

Mona Hassan · Aswan, Upper Egypt

    Week 2

Week two. The warp is set and I am about a third of the way through the body. The buyer asked for blue — I do not usually work in blue because it is harder to dye consistently with what I have. I tested two batches before I was satisfied with the colour. Nadia watched me set the warp. She managed four rows by herself before the tension went wrong. We pulled them out and started again. That is how you learn.

  • Leatherwork — bags and belts Delivered

    Four wedding belts, geometric border

    Nour Benkirane · Medina, Fez

Delivered on time. Four belts identical in pattern, each stamped with a slightly different border width because the buyers asked to be able to tell them apart. I charged a little more for the extra work. They agreed before I started.
